Bio
As the son of Grammy-winning clarinet legend, Richard Stoltzman, and renowned violinist and educator, Lucy Chapman, jazz pianist and educator Peter John Stoltzman naturally grew into a career as both a performer and teacher. Stoltzman has performed and recorded with jazz luminaries such as Steve Gadd, Eddie Gomez, Allison Miller, Ron Westray, Yosvanny Terry, Tia Fuller, and many more. He has worked at the highest levels of the industry in virtually every style, from recording contemporary classical music with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, to headlining festivals with the American Music Award-winning funk-rock band, The Bomb Squad, recording with the innovative drum’n’bass legend, Deantoni Parks, making Hip Hop tracks with Che Pope at Warner Bros., to performing classical and jazz music at the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall with his father, and recording original songs with winner of The Voice, Javier Colon.
In 2012, Peter came to Colorado as the head of the piano area at CU Denver, where he also founded the LYNX Music Industry Program for 14-18 year-olds. He has been the Co-Director of the Mentor Fellowship teacher training program at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, has led Young Audiences workshops and been the Music Director for Austin’s Leadership through the Arts Program, and given masterclasses around the world. In 2020, Peter began forging new paths, founding Colorado Music Bridge—a nonprofit dedicated to modern music education and mentorship. He also took on a teaching position at Colorado State University, and most recently at University of Denver.
Current projects include Peter’s New Standards Project (modern jazz arrangements of pop songs), Coexistence Trio (original Indie-Jazz), Spiraling Inward (with saxophonist John Ellis), The Democracy (Denver-based original modern jazz quintet), and collaborations with spoken word artists Theo Wilson and Dominique Christina, and Brazilian guitarist Gabriel Santiago.
Peter has two self-published Commercial Piano Workbooks available, including instructional video series’ on YouTube and over a hundred play-along tracks. He teaches privately at his home studio and online, where prospective students can sign up for lessons at pjslessons.setmore.com.
Peter graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1999, and earned his Master’s Degree in Jazz Composition with Academic Honors and Distinction in Performance, along with a Concentration in Music in Education from New England Conservatory in 2004. In 2010, Peter won first prize in the Philips Jazz Piano Competition. Peter took his first full-time teaching position at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2011-2012 before moving to Denver. He lives in Denver with his wife, Gray, and their two sons. Peter completed his DMA in Music and Human Learning from the University of Texas in May, 2014.
